The CEO of Pakistan International Airlines confirmed today, Friday, that at least 41 people were confirmed killed in a plane crash in a residential area of   Karachi, the largest city in Pakistan.

The Airbus aircraft with 99 people on board crashed as it approached the airport, and two passengers survived the accident.

"41 people have been confirmed dead in the plane crash," CEO Arshad Malik told a press conference.

He added that the Independent Transportation Safety Investigation Agency of Pakistan would investigate the accident.

On Friday, the Pakistani authorities announced that a passenger plane had crashed in Karachi, in the south of the country, with 107 passengers on board.
Akhtar said by phone from the scene of the accident: "At the moment we believe that there are no survivors of the plane itself, but it has not been confirmed." He added that there were believed to be survivors in the area where the plane crashed.

The plane crashed over a residential area near Karachi airport, which is likely to cause a high death toll.
Earlier on the announcement of the presence of survivors, the mayor of Karachi, Wasim Akhtar, announced that he did not expect any survivors to be on board the crashed plane.
Reports indicated that residential houses were destroyed and at least 10 people were injured.

Before the crash, the plane was trying to land at the airport. Immediately after the accident, black smoke was seen rising from the site.
